It all started with this: http://ift.tt/24t2ieL
Over the last months I have been tinkering with this model, on and off. Now it is finished.
Quick summary:
- Parts fit is superb, building really was a breeze.
- Contours are very true to the real thing, nothing overly simplified. Exception: The spinner could use a few more segments.
- Division lines between fuselage segments of the model follow mostly those on the real thing. Thus, no unnecessary lines to destroy the smooth contours of the model.
- "Dry" graphics. No weathering, no attempts to imitate glossy aluminium. The model looks like a technical drawing come to life. I like that.
- No separate flaps on wings, empennage, cooling system. Cockpit is rather basic. Dr. Zarkov describes his model as fairly simple. I see it as a possibility to build up a collection of varying paint schemes of the same subject in a justifiable amount of time. If you want to have a super detailed model with all the bells and whistles, please turn to a Halinski kit to complement these models. Also, this allows beginners in our pastime to get a really good looking model of the P-51 without frustration.
- I did not really understand the fairings of the exhaust stubs, so this part is done wrong by me. Also I had some troubles with the underbelly air intake.
- I did not build the landing gear. I like my models in flying configuration. Built a main landing gear leg, just out of curiosity. Goes together really well.
- Overall impression of this kit is superb, an absolute eye catcher! On 1st attempt I had the doors of the tailwheel well wrong, so I replaced them with a new part from spare cardboard.
As the Zarkovs seem to heve come to a gentleman´s agreement with all those repainters of this model, now you can legally buy all those repaints from their site.
- This will not have been my last build of this series: The Duchess Arlene from the Tuskegee Airmen is under construction right now, a repaint by Julian Fratelanutela which I downloaded with explicit allowance by the Zarkovs. Also, I want to improve on some things I did less than perfect. I will publish this too, just to do more justice to this model and the generous gesture of the Zarkovs.
Last pic shows the P-51 together with the Spitifre MK.IX by Halinski. An interesting comparison. Whilst the real aircraft were almost identical in size, the Mustang looks huskier, due to the angular shape of the wings and the empennage, the deep fuselage and the big blown cockpit canopy.
Cheers, Martin
