Gang,
Building card models is enjoyable -- well, usually. But some are more enjoyable than others. This model was, indeed, fun to build.
Here's a diorama based on a Chesley Bonestell painting (see attached) included in the 1956 book, The Exploration of Mars by Willy Ley and Werner von Braun. The Mars Ascent Stage is a 1/96 card model designed by S. E. Killenbeck. The Hab is a junked half of a plastic Vanguard satellite model with an airlock made from cardstock.
The figures are 1/72 Apollo astronauts modified and painted to look like the explorers in Bonestell's artwork. Although a different scale from the ascent stage, they look OK compared to the painting. The Martian surface is a piece of a "Desert Battle Map" I gather is intended for wargamers.
Books and TV shows about space exploration inspired me when I was a little kid. Perhaps that's why I enjoy turning "The Future As It Was" into 3-D models!
