This thread is for a beta build of Ilkd95's KV 30.01 tank. The KV 30.01 was a prototype for a German WW II medium tank, of which two examples were actually built (according to World of War Wiki), and which eventually led to the Tiger tank. Two gun versions are provided in the kit, the long barrel and the short.

The model kit has untextured parts outlines, with neither joining tabs or predrawn joining strips. I decided to make two models, one with the long barrel gun and the other with the long barrel. As a quick texturing cheat, I printed on colored cardstock, one on a kinda-desert-sand color and the other what I hoped would be dunkelgrun. Unfortunately, the actual card color, once taken out of the package, was a bright green. After building, I may try painting on some brown splotches for a fantasy camouflage.

The hull is built in two sections. The join seam will be hidden by the tank's fenders. I decided to back the hull parts with picture framing matt board, about 1.5 mm thick. I obtain the board from as scraps (about 1 sq ft per piece) from a local framing shop, 20 cents per piece. I printed out an extra black-and-white page to assist in freehanding the backing pieces. I did not add backing to the bottom of the upper hull half, thinking that I would be able to get a closer join between the two halves.

That does it for this session. The next installment I'm hoping to get the fenders, tracks, and suspension built, then follow up with the turrets, then the fiddly bits. In interest of time, since I had some real-life issues crop up between committing to the beta build and actually getting started on it, I will build the two versions in series rather than parallel, and just tack the pics of the finished second version at the end of this thread to finish it off.
