St. Catherine's Chapel

St.Catherine's Chapel stands on a hill in Abbotsbury overlooking the coast from Portland Bill to Bridport .Built in the late 14th century at the same time as the Abbotsbury Abbey, now in ruins, the chapel survived the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century most probably because it was useful as being used as a light house beacon being on top of the hill at 260ft high and is still in relatively good condition, the walls of 4 feet thick have undoubtedly aided this over the centuries too.
St Catherine's Chapel was built as a place of pilgrimage and retreat by the monks of the nearby Benedictine monastery.

The dedication of the chapel to St Catherine of Alexandria is rare, but her cult was one of the most popular in medieval England.Catherine of Alexandria in Rome was tortured and finally put to death on a wheel of spikes around 600 AD because she would not give up her conversion to Christianity.
Today, this is where the firework 'Catherine wheel' got it's name from.
The Chapel is a heavily buttressed building with an octagonal stair-turret on the North West side with protruding porches on both North and South faces.

The paper model will be at a scale of 1:175 with a base size of approx 250 x 160mm, height being 160mm.
I will design this model to be compatible for printing both A4 and Letter size pages.

Regards

Clive
