Greetings All ...
I am very excited to be your newest member and hope to learn quite a bit from the seasoned veterans of this community. As a former engineer, I NEVER imagined that a mechanical world of paper could exist. Now, as a middle school educator in both Technology Education AND Visual Art, I am constantly modeling paper engineering techniques that I gained throughout my life from individual experimentation and from the wonderful mentors that I have befriended.
As a practicing Fiber Artist, my interests in paper were almost immediate as I dove into the field of papermaking and bookbinding, concentrating specifically in the traditional craft from Japan. I was also infatuated with the innate abilities of the Japanese people in the packaging arts and soon immersed myself into this fabulous world. Coupled with my love for the science, math and technology world, my artistic endeavors as well as educational focus soon embraced and facilitated STEAM in my classroom long before the acronym was coined!!!
Back then we referred to them as interdisciplinary lessons and my students were creating Carousel Books, Pop Ups, Paper Structures, Modular Origami Hedrons and a plethora of other woven, cut and assembled paper sculptures often with strong cultural ties to the countries from which they once originated. I have been blessed to have traveled the world through a variety of teaching study tours so that I could best serve my educational community in providing a global perspective in my two disciplines of Tech Ed and Visual Art. However, my recent research into Japanese toys lead me to Karakuri ... Or Automata!!! Not only am I hooked, but I seem to be creating mini paper guzzling monsters among my students who have embraced its charm and whim!
So, in closing, I welcome anything and everything that you can share regarding this beautiful world of paper ... And likewise, I hope to serve as a new resource for each of you!
