How paper models were design in the time before computers?

I have look up and found some old Maly Modelarz kit that were publish in 60s or 70s.
For Example this T-54 which was published in 1973.
I just wondering what type of method did they use to get the pattern of the curvy turret.
Please let me know if you have any ideas.
