emblaser laser cutter

hello all,

just wanted to post my initial impression of the emblaser laser cutter.

one of my pet peeves has always been my inability to keep cuts 'squared up' when cutting with a knife. i always felt that the time i spent sanding to get edges just right, a waste. i surfed the internet for solutions and for a time seriously considered getting a mechanical die cutting machine. ultimately i decided against those because i figured out that these machines are not capable of cutting really small parts. the blade is limited by the dimensions of its own cutting surface. i then looked at laser cutters and soon realized that the price of these units to be several thousand dollars. there are chinese cutters on ebay that are cheaper but their performance, build quality, documentation and support seemed questionable at best. plus most of them tend to be co2 based which require serious ventilation and cooling. finally while visiting a geman modeling site i read about the diode based emblaser. i visited emblaser website and finally found the machine i was looking for! just to be sure i contacted a couple of users and asked for their opinion. one of them is paper shipwright's david hathaway. he kindly replied with a glowing recommendation and i was sold when i learned that he had cut 1/200 scale ships railings with ease!

the emblaser began as a kickstater project by darkly labs based in australia and run by domenic di giorgio. the machine comes in the form of a kit and the a4 version costs $701.00 including the cutting software and shipping to usa. from the day i ordered it took just shy of 4 weeks for the machine to arrive. after downloading the excellent building instructions it took me about 6 hours to assemble it all. everything is provided, even the allen wrenches. the only other tools i needed were a screwdriver and pliers. the user manual, the cut2d software by vectric and the universal g code sender are also easy to use and require no more skill than using any average computer software.

i have had this machine for about a month now and i am thrilled with it. i think it will significantly change how i make models and their quality. mind you i have just made some simple parts so far but i think my knives, scissors and files are going to get rusty!

the 1/48 scale shovel head is plain copy paper.

Attachment 263331

the 4 tiny parts are 2mm wide

Attachment 263332

finally, the learning curve is not steep at all but does require patience to assemble the machine correctly and experiment with the settings. the one thing that can be frustrating is focusing the laser to be the sharpest possible, especially for someone like me with less than perfect vision. one of the things that sold me about this machine is the support. domenic promptly answered a couple of questions i had. the darkly labs forum is great and i suppose this having started as a kickstarter project the community is a bunch of like minded diy'ers who are very keen on helping each other, just like here!

check out their websitehttps://darklylabs.com/ and see if this is something you may want.

How to soften pencil crayons?

I'm currently working on my third paper model, I'm building some of the Canon one-page animals as was kindly suggested to me by Vermin King.

I'm concerned with colouring the edges of the paper, not the printed surface or the opposite side, but the skinny in-between part that will show as a thin white line if not corrected. I've tried felt pens, but find that the ink soaks in and shows through the printed surface. I've tried watercolour, but seem to lack the necessary skills. Pencil crayons seem almost the right solution for me.

If only the pencil crayons were a bit softer they'd be just about ideal. I find that in order to colour (in particular) the ends of the edges I must press too hard and/or repeat too many times, such that the paper is somewhat deformed by the time it looks good. Well, by the time it would have looked good, were it not deformed.

I've tried dipping the pencils in isopropanol and letting them sit overnight, however this doesn't seem to have softened the 'lead' at all. Does anyone know what, if anything, they might be soaked in that would result in a softer pencil which would transfer the necessary colour with less pressure / fewer repetitions?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Deviant Art Guide?

Does anybody know of a guide for the Deviant Art website? It seems to contain a great many paper models, but organized by their creators, so only if you learn an artist's name can you search for his models. I tried a wild-card symbol in the URL, which at first seemed to let me search for models, but the results were few and did not include some that I knew existed there.

My new Lasercutter toy

Hi together, from Markus Germany,

I register only, 5 Weeks before. My interest is, to make my own
Models.
I dream about, to get an Lasercutter, but due to the costs i don't buy
one.
Last week, i saw an advertisment, i can't walk past.

Its a 40k Lasercutter "China Cracker", with a moshidrawborad, and an Dongl byside. Its watercooled, by an little poolpump, an the exaust ventilator, comes from a kitchen accessories.
Really funny.

I know from the guy, who sells this "Deviltypewriter" to me, that i have to
try a little bit, because there is no guidance left.

On Day 2, i cut my first parts. On Day 3, it works, to convert from Rhino 3D, to CorelDraw, to Moshidraw, in a easy way.

I have now, to work on, to get the best cutting result, in strength, speed, and focus of the my "Deviltypewriter", in depency, of the different Materials(Paper 160 g, Finnpappe, Bristol,...)

Sorry, for the bad Pictures, its not my camera(FZ1000), its me, i convert
it to a bad foto.

Greetings

Markus

Nippom Maru by Senaun (Restoration from SD-style templates)

The first successful experience with the redesigning Senaun's MS Pacific Venus encouraged me to do the same with Nippon Maru cruise ship (SD-style or super-deformed paper model of the same designer - Mr. Masato Nishiguchi aka Senaun).
This task was too much harder than previous (in the case of Pacific Venus restoration I used 1-1400 simple paper model of PaperDiorama's Pacific Venis in normal dimentions as a blueprints). I have only decks plans and photos of the real thing. Also, the MS Pacific Venus templates were in vector format while Nippon Maru was in bitmap, so I have to vectorize it first. But I had the experience of building SD variant of Nippon Maru and this helped a lot.
Here are the photos of SD Nippon Maru (I enlarged twice the templates and the scale is about 1:250).

uhu02 JJ-Verse Enterprise Build

Hello all!

Semi-lurker here, finally posting a build thread here for the fun of it!

I had done small, not too complicated builds before but decided to tackle uhu02 JJ-Verse Enterprise as my next project -- and on top of that, I decided to scale it up!

I've spent ages on it so far, having to cut and rebuild pieces -- I'm really picky about my own work!

And just when things were going well -- this happened. Oops.

In case you can't tell, as I was attaching the top of the saucer section, I got to the very last few tabs and found that the section didn't sit flush, resulting in sort of a "Duck Bill" type effect and I had to scrap months of part time work and the entire saucer section.

Dan Beaman

Hi. I have been building models since I was about 5 years old and I look forward to your site.

IAFM copyright issues.

Hi everyone.

I collected many models of the IAFM. I bought them during the 60's and 70's'. As they grew older and started getting yellow I photocopied them and when computers and colour printers came about I kept scanning but the quality deteriorated. An architect friend of mine had managed to "revive" and improve the colouring giving the old model new lease of life. A friend of mine saw them and asked if he can buy some of them. I asked him to wait till I've found out about the copyright situation concerning them. I try to contact the IAFM re the copyright issues but no one there seemed to shed any light on it. I tried to google search some of the artists but to no avail. So here is the conundrum, Most of these models were produced in the late 70's till the mid or late 90's. I am quite willing to give my friend scanned copies but is it legally wrong? morally wrong? or is giving them for free is ok. Please help.

Lockheed WP-3D Orion

With hurricane season and the huge pacific Hurricane Patricia, news articles and videos of the Lockheed WP-3D Orion have appeared.

These "highly modified" P3 Orions are pretty awesome planes that are purposely flown into and through hurricanes with a wide spectrum of instruments and gear for measurement and study. These two NOAA planes compliment the WC-130J's flown by the 53d Weather Reconnaissance Squadron.

KV 30.01 beta build

This thread is for a beta build of Ilkd95's KV 30.01 tank. The KV 30.01 was a prototype for a German WW II medium tank, of which two examples were actually built (according to World of War Wiki), and which eventually led to the Tiger tank. Two gun versions are provided in the kit, the long barrel and the short.

Attachment 263149Attachment 263150

The model kit has untextured parts outlines, with neither joining tabs or predrawn joining strips. I decided to make two models, one with the long barrel gun and the other with the long barrel. As a quick texturing cheat, I printed on colored cardstock, one on a kinda-desert-sand color and the other what I hoped would be dunkelgrun. Unfortunately, the actual card color, once taken out of the package, was a bright green. After building, I may try painting on some brown splotches for a fantasy camouflage.

Attachment 263151

The hull is built in two sections. The join seam will be hidden by the tank's fenders. I decided to back the hull parts with picture framing matt board, about 1.5 mm thick. I obtain the board from as scraps (about 1 sq ft per piece) from a local framing shop, 20 cents per piece. I printed out an extra black-and-white page to assist in freehanding the backing pieces. I did not add backing to the bottom of the upper hull half, thinking that I would be able to get a closer join between the two halves.

Attachment 263152Attachment 263153Attachment 263154Attachment 263155

Attachment 263156Attachment 263157Attachment 263158

That does it for this session. The next installment I'm hoping to get the fenders, tracks, and suspension built, then follow up with the turrets, then the fiddly bits. In interest of time, since I had some real-life issues crop up between committing to the beta build and actually getting started on it, I will build the two versions in series rather than parallel, and just tack the pics of the finished second version at the end of this thread to finish it off.

Visit to Israel

I had the great pleasure of meeting some of my Israeli paper modelers colleagues while on a trip to Israel last week. I took the opportunity of combining my various meetings with this group.

We met at Yoav's home on Monday Oct 26th morning and spent 4 glorious hours with the folks being served tea, coffee and pastries.

In our meeting we had Yoav, Yaron, Theo, Ron P. and Moshe A. Since this was during working hours, it was not easy to gather.

I was surprised at this gathering and folks brought their finished models as well as in process projects.

In addition, each showed their techniques, challenges and build tips. Yoav also gave us a live demo on weathering his F-15 panels, and engine side inlet attachment.

here are some pics.
