May 9th is an important day in Russia, marking the end of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). It is roughly equivalent to our VE day which falls on May 8th. This year marked the 70th anniversary, and the national celebrations were especially huge. The Russians have always been fond of military parades, and a lot of new hardware was trotted out for the occasion. Their new APC, the "Bumerang" made its first public appearance. Very little is known about this vehicle, but I'm sure wikipedia will fill in as the months roll by. I can tell you that it's amphibious, has some type of new ceramic armor, and can be fitted with several different turrets and weapons systems. This one sports a 7.62mm machine gun.
One of the Russian VK model communities that I'm a member of offered a free download of the Boomerang in 1:50 scale for a modelling contest. I wasn't eligible for the contest, but I built one anyway. It's an intentionally simple kit so that younger or less experienced modelers could compete.
I modified mine slightly with axles made of paper Q-Tip shafts so I could turn the front 4 wheels just like the real thing. I also layered the hatches, etc for a better look. The flag and special side insignia were carried just for the May 9 parade. The model came out OK. Enjoy the pics.
