about the last debate involving IPMS Philippines BA

Hi to all, I can't help but comment on the last debate... and because the thread has been closed, I would like to offer my side on this, for everyone's benefit...

like josephbtc, I've been with the guys from IPMS Philippines for many many years already, just as long as when I also got started on paper modeling, and finally joining, and being accepted as a member here

and to emphasize - no, not one single member from IPMS Philippines has ridiculed paper/card models in any single way, in fact, a good number are even enthusiastic about it, especially when I share some of the works made by our folks here, along with a few of my own...

and to elaborate on Joseph's remarks, here's the reasons why card models are still not a part of the annual Nationals set up by our local club...

1. the competition is mainly for models predominantly made from plastic specifically, which is fair... models that are made from wood metal, or any other material other than plastic aren't allowed, in fact...

the rules, however, says that any model to be entered in the contest should be at least 50% styrene/resin (aka plastic) by content/weight... so that means, the other 50% can be composed of any material/medium the modeler may wish to add, and that includes paper...

2. in reality, here in our country, despite being noticed more and more, paper/card modeling (not including paper mache', origami, etc) is still not a popular enough medium for scale models... I would say, there's just a small percentage of us who build paper models here in our country, and even fewer builds the more impressive ones...

that being said, those who do build them always receive some very serious admiration from their audience, including other, professional scale modelers... along with that famous line we always hear; "no way that's paper!", or something like that

3. regarding #2, this is one of the main reasons why card models are not being included in the competition... there's simply not a lot to go by... builders are very few and very far in between, and to justify opening up a model category for the competition, there should be, at least, a justifiable number of participants, and entries... or else, the category either gets deleted from the contest, or is not opened altogether...

and this is the same for wood models, metal models, and even plastic model categories that either aren't popular, or failed to gather enough participants and entries (this happens yearly)

which leads us to #4. IPMS Philippines has made it a point that the annual Nationals should, and always will be, a free for all competition and event, meaning, anyone can enter their models for no charge at all, and anyone can visit the venue without paying anything at all... but the reality is, organizing the event always took a lot of support from sponsors (local hobby shops, malls, even mainstream model kit brands) and in kind from donations, so it is understandable why the organizers are so meticulous at everything, from the rules, to the categories, and to the resources that they are given... because they wanted an honest, fair, and meaningful event, true to the theme...

otherwise, the sponsors would have kicked us out already... no more nationals...

5. that being said, they always try their best to offer a "display only" nook (display tables permitting), from which modelers are free to volunteer their models for display for everyone to see, and unlike the competition proper, this is a "no holds barred" type of affair... meaning any model, from any medium, from any subject, are more than welcome to be featured... including paper models

my fellow IPMS members Joseph, and Daryl were simply misquoted... in fact, they have been one of the greatest admirers of our form of scale modeling, and one of them is an occasional paper modeler.

to be honest, I, too, also have opened the idea many years ago, and like shin_kazama, we ran into some misunderstanding, but after some good discussion and healthy debate, all things cleared out...

like Joseph said, if more and more paper models come out, the organizers are more than happy to open up a paper model category... and if more and more beautiful works come out, then they will be happily accepted as entries (which, I believe, is how paper models were finally allowed in the competitions held by IPMS USA)

I have to admit, I got hurt from the "conflict" that one guy started here... not only because I build on both mediums (same as many of our guys here), but also because this guy tried to cause a ruckus to the two groups from which I both belong, and both I consider as family in my hobby life...

in this case, I would like to apologize to everyone, both from IPMS Philippines and here in the Paper Modelers forum... and to all members, rest assured that despite the friendly rivalry between paper and plastic models, everyone respects and admires each other's works, regardless of the material it was made...

:)
