Complete History Books

At Hobby Lobby, stumbled onto three history/model books from Thunder Bay Press: "Cars: A Complete History," "Planes: A Complete History," and "Trains:A Complete History." Each features about 50 simple paper models of significant vehicles or aircraft, and it's clever that a guide book remains after the models are built. The books also are available from the publisher, Amazon, and Barney Noble. The link for the first is Cars: A Complete History - Thunder Bay Press , and links lead to the other two books.

Unfortunately, the models are apt to be far too simple for members of this Forum, and the $20 prices are steep. But such a book could be a great gift to introduce children to paper modeling.

What a pleasure to find this website

My wife showed me an article out of Air & Space Magazine about this website and I had to check it out! I have always enjoyed building models (aircraft and cars) but never thought about paper... so... now I can try my hand at this and see if I can get my grandson to join me!

Hello to every modelers

I'm looking forward in meeting new modelers here & meeting new friends.:)

I can't wait to show off my models to everyone here & maybe post up of my design models that i am working on.

Mayfly Build

I am building this model for Women's History Month March 2016 as I reported earlier today in Leif's thread on Lilian Bland. I'm using Leif's excellent 1/16 scale drawing as a reference and building guide.

I decided to start with the engine since it's pretty intricate and getting it done will, I hope give me the incentive to keep going. So far I have completed two cylinders and finished the cylinder head on one of them.

The closeup photos of the cylinder head are very unforgiving but I think when the engine is completed it will look OK.

Schreiber-Bogen Dirigible

Stopped at an estate sale just for S&G's and found this

for 50¢ US. That is half a dollar. It was all that was available.

Pages are 220mm x 310 mm as presented that open to 440mm x 310mm. Backs are grey with some parts reference numbers and a few colored areas. There is even still a stiff piece of chipboard to provide support and a printed sheet with a list of Schreiber-Bogen models from what looks like a few decades ago.

The pages are a bit discolored due to age but nothing to worry about.

Hi Everyone

Like a few others, I just read the article in Air & Space and was interested in learning more.

We're in Air&Space Magazine

This month's Smithsonian Air&Space magazine (print & online) includes a one-page article on space paper models featuring Ken West's Apollo Command Module as built by Billy Lilleveld. The article includes photos of the model and quotes from Ken and it sends readers to this forum for more information.

Congratulations Ken and Billy. This is BIG TIME.

And a huge "Thank You" to Smithsonian Air&Space -- a great magazine!

Historical Buildings from Czechoslovakia

VYSTŘIHOVÁNKY HOSTIVICKÝCH STAVEB

Vystøihovánky - Hostivická historie

A collection of models of buildings.

Deja Vu all over again as the late Yogi Berra said. Went out to Tulare, CA to see my

house again and maybe do some more work on it. First time I'd been back since I discovered it had been broke into with a lot of books and models gone. Well in spite of boarding up the broken windows and not having much in there I would consider worth stealing, I was wrong on both counts. And maybe because of the previous and changing all the locks, etc. they made a real mess getting in and what they didn't take pretty much dumped everything into a big pile and destroyed another window along with the window mounted ac unit. As the final blow the back of the garage that faces into the alley got tagged with the South Tulare Locos emblems about 5 ft high indicating this is their territory. I gathered up what was still left and put it into a storage unit there and came back to AZ. Seriously considering walking away from the place. Already lost between 3 to 5 thousand dollars worth of stuff. Because its becoming real obvious that even when I move over there that if I decide to take off for a week to visit, do a show, etc.; if I don't have Ft. Knox security I'm going to come back to a ripped off place. Or it could just get torched like the house that had been next door. Don't want to deal with that crap, that's why I'm retiring.

Hi!

Another newbie who read the Smithsonian Air & Space article -- this looks like a chance (as I approach retirement from the Aerospace industry) to resume the model-building hobby I enjoyed as a young man.

Hello

Hi, I read the Article "Paper, Scissors, Rocket: in the November issue of Air&Space Smithsonian which calls out this site. I'm new at this and would like to ask for a pointer to a download to start with and learn the basics and get some experience. As a start would be interested in an Apollo rocket .

Thanks,

Problem uploading attachments

I suspect I have reached my quota for attachments - ~18 MB? as I am unable to upload additional attachments. There have been many attachments that I've "unattached" from the post they were intended for, and I'd love to delete those, but I don't see any way to do so.

The specific message I'm getting is:

Quote:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 25839729 bytes) in /home/papermod/public_html/forum/includes/class_image.php on line 2390
That's 128 MB, though, so surely my 18 MB isn't exceeding that limit... what else could be wrong? The problem exists when attempting to upload from multiple computers on multiple networks.

Thanks in advance.

GPS IIR Satellite

Here is my seventh build; the Global Positioning Satellite GPS IIR from Baseband Technologies found on their website Baseband Technologies Inc. | Ultra Low Power GPS Receiver Technologies | Instant position for anything that moves.
Overall this model isn’t a difficult build – off the page. But as I started researching and attempting to modify and correct certain details I found myself more and more on a steep scratch-building and learning curve.

I mixed materials using gloss, card stock, 20lb as recommended for some parts, dowel for the solar panel support, picks for the RCS nozzles and “now for something completely different” galvanized wire. The instructions provided a basic representation of this satellite. But after a brief review of some nice photos from Lockheed and a really good publication called “GPS Block IIR and IIR-M Antenna Panel Pattern, Marquis, Feb2014 - publically releasable data” I suspected that I could modify the pattern to bring more detail into the model.
Scratch built details are the: Earth Sensor, BDS, BDX, Fine Sun Sensor, L Band and UHF antenna baffles, Apogee motor (STAR 37XFP) and the RCS nozzles. I should have done a better job on the baffles. At the time, I rushed my understanding of flattened truncated conics and … frankly they aren’t great. The apogee motor also, is - I suspect – not true to scale, but my scaled measurements frankly looked WAY too big. So I selected a smaller part from a 48th scale build and hoped no one but me would notice. Last but not least are those tree shaped antennas along the x axis. The instructions would have you stack cross pieces of paper with 1-2mm tubes separating and frankly it isn’t to scale and appeared too flimsy. So I opted for galvanized wire. I got some help with how best to build the structure here in the forums. I was surprised with the weight once installed and had to become pretty creative in securing those structures. Ultimately, I passed the wires through two parts of the bus and then looped it back to keep it relatively in the right place. I did have to add some extra external support to the holes as my trial and error assemblies weakened the paper considerably.
This build is on my wish list of models to provide a revised document to supplement the basic parts and instructions. It’s a great addition to my growing fleet with its bristling appearance.
It’s worth noting that this is the legacy version of the GPS satellites launched from 2000 to 2009. Only the first 12 of 20 satellites in this series look exactly like this. The latter 8 have an improved antenna panel and solar arrays. Then following this series are the GPS IIF and the GPS III satellites.
I hope you enjoy the pics. I have included some additional pics from my source material here in my Imgur gallery.

Greetings everyone!

Soooo, i'm supposed to spam here as part of the anti spam protocol ;) ?

Anyway, i started building a Star Wars fleet (already got a Naboo Fighter and an A Wing) and stumbled upon imcold's X-Wing, which really blew my mind! But sagittarius' build of said model also showed me that there is still much to learn ^^'
On David's homepage is a photo of a ring with ~4mm outher and ~3mm inner diameter. And it's cut out with almost perfect precision. I -need- to learn how to do that. :D
Therefore i started reading the First Cuts threads to find useful techniques, but soon noticed that i'm not allowed to view pictures as anon, so here i am.

Keep up the good work everyone,
cheers,
Kselia

Where has Chris been and his new diorama project

Hey all!
Long time no talk, much too long. I figured what better way to get back into it than start something.... Of course the worlds greatest holiday is Halloween...

I am making a hologram diorama for the front window similar to this:

Make a cool hologram illusion!

I will be making it in a window sized box. Background will be a small church and cemetery. Foreground will hopefully be a gallows and coffin. I plan on putting a small cauldron in the back half with water and dry ice to make fog in the cemetery. Not sure how things will work out but we will see! The church and cemetery I got covered but anyone seen a free gallows or guillotine anywhere? I have coffins from ravensblight of course (love that place!)

Updates will be posted here.... Also I FINALLY got my own modelling space where I can leave stuff setup and the kids dont like to go - my work side of the basement ;) so that should help!

So where have I been.... job change (which you might know about) keeping busy as heck building two data centers for my job, one in Chicago and one in ashburn Virginia. Usual financial issues like lots of folks but finally getting caught up there. I couldn't secure funding for selling pre-printed kits and hard to make economically feasible except as a hobby.... still considering it once I can turn around my financial issues. Might need to sell off some of my personal paper kit inventory to make it happen.... project kickstarter, who knows. Banks dont like it though!.

Anyways its good to be back and I hope to be around a good long while :)
Chris

comming soon?

Vienna Secession

Interesting news for lovers of (early) 20th Century architecture. I have at last come into contact with Hugo Reissner, designer of the two Adolf Loos models I have been offering for sale as reproductions. There was a third model: the Vienna Secession (arch. Josef Olbrich), which marked the beginning of the Jugendstil in Vienna. Mr Reissner has made his last and only copy available to me so (if I get enough reactions to this newsflash!) I can prepare a reproduction. Like the Haus Lange which I did last year, it will be printed, not a lasercopy. 1/33,3, 14 pages A4, ca. 111 parts, brochure and instructions in German and English. Price will be 21,50 EUR.
At the same time, I was given 20 original copies of the Haus Moller - price 8,65 EUR. A search is going on for remaining copies of the Chicago Tribune Column - if / when it becomes available I will inform you on the News page of my website.

This reprint will only be possible if I get enough reactions. The Haus Lange sold 27 copies worldwide (ours is a very small market...), which exactly covered the costs. My price is based on the same number to be sold - so if I get many more reservations I will be able to lower it! Just send me a pm.

Private messages not working?

Hi admins,
Am I doing something wrong, or did PMs stop working for me?

I composed a message and clicked the "send" button. That got me back to main PM page without any confirmation about the message having been sent. When I look at Sent items folder, it is empty.

Additional details:
1) The message contained six links and one e-mail address. Is there any limit about this? When I previewed the message before sending, the forum did not complain.
2) I tried to remove parts of the message and send it again, finally ending up with one "this is a test message" sentence. Still the same result.
3) I have 7 messages in the inbox and empty outbox, so there should be no overflow problems.

What could be wrong?

NAVY FIGHTERS 1954 : Cougar , Fury , Cutlass 1:48

Dear All - the US naxy was undergoing a big change toward 1954 .
The second generation jets with swept wings was about to enter service.
The jets here are : Cougar F9F of Geli. 1: 48
F-86 f instead of Fury fj-2 1:48
Cutlass F7U-3M 1:48
These 3 new planes at the time represent the 1954 era after the Korea war and
the transition from straight wing to swept wing.
Later I will add more details about each one.

Excellent place to get Metal Earth kits

Hi all,
I was in Minnetonka, Minnesota on business a little while back and one of my co-workers found out that I am starting to collect the Metal Earth kits. He said that at the Eden Prairie Center mall (in nearby Eden Prairie) there is a store called, "Air Traffic Kites ans Games that sold some of these.

Some of these...that was an understatement. When I went there, I had NEVER seen so many different ones available! I would guess they have at least 30 or so different ones. I purchased the LM that I had been wanting for a VERY long time. I wanted to buy the X-Wing and R2-D2, but had to save the rest of my money for food for the remainder of my trip.

I will get there again, somehow...

Here is information from the Eden Prairie Center web site:
http://ift.tt/1LIKsK8
Location: Lower Level, Kohl's Wing,1240
Phone: (952) 941-3335
Hours:
Mon-Sat: 10am-9pm
Sun: 11am-6pm
Website: airtrafficonline.com

I did not see the Metal Earth kits from their website however.

Best Regards,

The "first kid on the block to own" GPM USS California & Fantom HMS Good Hope

I received these yesterday.

I have started buying the laser cut frames (life's too short not to!), but this is the first time I have bought a detail set. With that crazy "cage mast" on the California it seemed like the right thing to do.

The graphics on both look fantastic. I'm thinking it's time to retire so I have time for more building!

I will probably detail my brother to put the California's frames together when he is in town for Christmas.

russ..

Heavy Cruiser HMAS Canberra, 1/400

My previous ship model, HMCS Midland is in fact done, missing only rigging, and I've begun to build another 1/400 warship. This time it's legendary Aussie heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra - the ship of County class that was lost in tragic battle at Savo Island 8. - 9. 8. 1942 together with 3 US Navy cruisers.
Model is my own drawing, based on JSC model Norfolk. I've found on internet and other sources the most probably appearance of Canberra this day, including cammo of Chicago Blue color that were used by non-US ship, operating under US Navy command (HMAS Australia, HMS Victorious etc).
As always, my model is simple, without hundreds of details - only for fun. :-)

First is construction of hull:

Sides and deck:

First superstructures:

Conning tower:

To be continued ....
