What if... DH.88 Jet Comet

What would have happened if Frank Whittle was turned down by Gloster and went to De Havilland instead? Perhaps they would have taken their most sleek design and because of it, they might have added not one but two jets to the plane. Perhaps the RAF would have put it into a test program early on and perhaps it would have been in active duty in 1940 during the Battle of Britain. Perhaps.
One thing is for certain: The DH.88 with jets looks quite good.

It started out with a turned inside out build of the fuselage and wings of the DH.88, made from the Lad'n'Dad Comet from Ecardmodels. Scaled down to two pages on 1 A4 sheet, I wanted just this shape to admire. I love that slender wing and swift like feel this plane has.

this was two years back. This week I decided to revisit the DH.88 and add two jets instead of the Gypsy six props. This meant I had to more or less kitbash the model, because of the disappearance of the wheel wells in the prop nacelles and lack thereof in the jet ones. The recolouring was relatively easy because there is a uncoloured version in the Lad'n'Dad package.

I used the landing gear of Zio Prudenziati's Macchi 202 Folgore because I recently made it (also in a recolour by myself) and I liked the way the landing gear goes together. I took the engine nacelles of Gerard Methorst's Gloster Meteor and scaled them down to the DH.88's wing size. Not sure the nacelles were the right size but, well, I don't really care about that... (-;
I scaled the 1/50 engines down to 1/72, which I think is the plane's scale.
I also made the canopy a little bigger using a Malcolm hood from a Spitfire model by Emil Zarkov.

It might not be the cleanest build, but that wasn't the point. This is more or less made as a quickie for a quick satisfying result during builds that take centuries to finish, like the Zil 4906 I am working on at the moment...
