Hi all,
It’s been awhile, but I recently found myself with a rare bit of free time and decided to try my hand at making a card model. Haven’t broken out the exacto knife in years, but despite being a bit rusty I think the result came out rather nicely.
I was originally looking for a USN Arleigh Burke destroyer. Despite what they say, you actually can’t find anything online. For whatever reason, the Arleigh Burke is apparently not a model the people crave.
So instead, I settled on a model of the JMSDF’s latest class of destroyer, the 10,000-ton Atago-class Ashigara, which is essentially equivalent to a Flight-IIa Burke, though there are some significant differences.
The model was fun to build (sorry there are no build pics, it didn’t occur to me post this here until I was nearly complete!). There were no directions, though, so I had to get a little creative in figuring out how all these parts fit together. I am 100% sure this is not entirely accurate due to what essentially amounted to guesswork and having to rely on low-quality online pics of the model as my only reference. Nevertheless, I am pleased with the result.
The designer included decent detailing for a ship this size (it measures a little less than 10” fully assembled), but I crafted a few extras myself, like the anchors on the bow. I also raided an old plastic model kit for spare parts, like the 5” barrel and Phalanx CIWS mounts. Surprisingly, the scale isn’t too far off so the parts only appear a bit smaller than they should. There are some other details I may yet add—triple-barrel torpedo launchers, more detailing/doors to the VLS, some more detail to the mast, but I think those will be long-term ambitions.
All in all, I would recommend this to folks looking for a fun project that they can complete relatively quickly. I was really itching to try out the Kongo model I saw online (and which someone else is posting about here), but I didn’t have the time to dive into that. Hope you enjoy the pics.
