My wife's death a couple of years back hit me a lot harder than I ever expected it to...since then, I seem to have lost interest in most of the activities I enjoyed before, paper models included. Maybe even paper models especially....I tried starting a build a couple of times, but usually found myself just staring at the printed out pages...actually putting knife to paper seemed to be not worth the effort.
Recently, I ran across a Facebook posting to the effect that, no matter how badly broken you are, somewhere out there is someone that will hug you so hard that all the pieces will fit together again. Fortunately, I met that person, and last month I married her. Yesterday, I pulled out one of the kits that have been sitting around pretty much untouched, and actually started building it, and enjoying it. (At least, up to the point that spinal stenosis kicked my butt hard enough to drive me back to the recliner.) Since then I've managed a couple more build sessions, and am actually making enough progress for my new wife to start realizing what she's gotten herself into as the spouse of a paper modeler. So, I think I'm finally back as an active builder, even if the pauses to unload the back are longer and more frequent.
The model I've started is the RobotoTeknick HO scale rail gun. I obtained it as a download from their old web download page. I don't know if that page still exists, for I tried finding it a few days ago without success. The kit goes far beyond just the rail gun...it has the entire train, plus a couple of vehicles. Engine and coal car, a couple of ammunition box cars, a dormitory car, a command car, and a couple of gondola cars. The project I have in mind will eventually be about a 2 ft. by 4 ft. chunk of static scenery space for the model railroad I've been collecting pieces for over the last several years. If there is any interest, and if I can master the new Nikon camera that replaced my trusty old Canon, I will start a build thread for it.
