ZiS-6 and PPG tankette, 1/50

The PPG tankette was developed by the soviets during their offensive against Finland. Known as the "mobile machine gun nest", it was intended to be used against fortified positions, which had previously taken a heavy toll on their infantry. A prime mover such as the ZiS-6 4x6 truck would carry the PPG into the battle zone, with the tankette responsible for the final approach. It was powered by a motorcycle engine, and carried two 7.62 machine guns. The two man crew sat upright while traveling and, when nearing the target, would maneuver into a prone position for the final assault. Reportedly, about 100 of them were built in 1940, but none ever saw combat.

Both kits were designed by Sergey Kamotsky of Robototehnik. As I've come to expect from Sergey, the fit and finish of both models was flawless. The PPG is tiny in 1/50 scale; only about 1 3/4 inches square. I cut out the opaque windows in the ZiS-6, and made panes of cellophane. I dropped the cargo sides to better show off the tankette. The paper base has a weathered wood finish, and a dirt road texture was sized to fit. I glued down a bit of static grass and a root fiber to add some dimension.
