N Gauge in Paper and a Build Thread

Hello Friends :)

Downsizing somewhat from my recent foray into 0 Gauge, this model is a 2mm/ft (or 1:152, if you prefer) British railways MkI coach. I opted for this 'Finescale' size, as N comes in two sizes (at least) and this happens to be somewhere in the middle....

The design is over five years old now, and although it is more 'graphic' in style than my larger stock, still stands up pretty well. Besides which, as can be seen in the last picture, I ran up a whole fleet of the things in various guises (most of which still need some work!) They're designed using Photoshop 7, and are drawn out at this scale, not 'shrunk' from larger drawings. I'm going to be making at least one or two in maroon, and there'll be a diesel loco to haul them as well, a little later on.

The MkI coaches were first introduced by B.R. in 1951, and being of steel frame and body construction were much stronger than most previous generations of coaching stock. Variants of the type were still being constructed up to 1974, and the last of the type was withdrawn from service in 2005.

Having such a long life-span means they came in a huge variety of colours, which always makes things interesting! Early stock was carmine and cream (also known as Blood and Custard), Western region stock was chocolate and cream, and the Southern's green. This was superseded by maroon, and then the 'corporate' blue and grey of the late 60's; privitisation of the railways brought in a whole gamut of (mostly terrible!) colour schemes, then there is all the departmental stock, and we mustn't forget the Post Office travelling mail trains.... so, lots to choose from :)

For the record, the finished model in the picture was printed on some iffy quality card - this was a long time ago! and the detail image is the recently updated model I'm working on; with more detailing and other refinements.
