The Lander from "Interstellar," Take 2....

Ok, here is my second attempt of Uhu02's Lander from "Interstellar." A friend was able to enlarge it electronically, retaining all the color and fidelity of the original 1/200th version. This one is a little over double the size of the original (1/96th, perhaps?) and it looks much better than my 200-percent-on-a-photocopier first try.

I added detail throughout. I cut out all the flight deck windows (44 in all) and backed them with clear plastic. Since the flight deck has windows on the top, bottom and front, that results in a see-through model. I didn't want to go to the trouble of building an interior, so I backed the clear plastic with a dark-gray card.

I recessed the top and bottom airlock hatches. I used a circle cutter to cut out the hatches, then used gray cardstock to make a shallow hatchway. Once that was done, I glued the circular hatch to the hatchway. I also cut out a donut-shaped piece to glue to the outside of the hatch, giving it some surface relief.

The shutters that cover the front four windows, as well as the four windows on the top sides of the front were also added. I used details from a second set of printouts to add some raised detail, including the rectangular hatches along the side of the nose.

On the Eagle-esque outrigger pods, I punched out holes for the RCS nozzles, and also small rectangular openings in the front of the pods that I've seen in some photos of the "real" vehicle. At this point, I should note an error in Uhu02's front outriggers. There needs to be a small section cut out of one of the panels to get them to fit properly along the underside of the fuselage. The rear outriggers have the cutout, but for some reason, Uhu02 didn't include the cutout on the front outriggers. As a result, if you build the thing "as is," you'll not be able to get the front pods to fit properly.

I used Uhu02's nozzles as a template to cut my own from dark gray cardstock, then glued them to black disks I cut with a circle cutter. I cut very thin strips of cardstock and glued them as "hatbands" on the nozzles. Again, I saw them in photos and Uhu02 depicts them as light lines on his nozzles. I only did a couple of hatbands on each nozzle, though, because you don't see much of the bottoms of the nozzles once they are glued into their recessed openings.
