Bacchus, he roll...

Mardi Gras is coming up this Tuesday, so I thought it time to build this truly odd parade float showing Bacchus and his chauffeur. You might think this antique offering is from Imagerie d'Epinal Pellerin, but no, it is from the lesser-known Imagerie Delhalt, Nancy, France. Presumably using the same printing techniques as Pellerin, namely, a single lithographed stone prints only the black line while the colors are added later by stencil, images like these were among the first color prints available to the mass market. Though more research needs to be done, Imagerie Delhalt appears to have concentrated on printing single-page morality tales, the comic books of their time, rather than early card models such as this.

Here we see Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and drunkenness, and his designated driver, an aging Cupid, on their way to, or on their way back from...does it really matter? A good time was had, or will be had by all involved. Drive safely this holiday, you wouldn't want to crash your chicken.

Score and fold,

Thumb Dog
