MM Renault R17

Having finished the challenging Kettenkrad, I'm ready to start a new project. I'm still in the mood for armor, but I wanted something that wouldn't be quite so demanding. My project selection process is usually rather haphazard, but this time I gave the subject considerable thought.

I've had a fatal fascination for early Mały Modelarz models ever since I read the hilarious description of cjwalas' contest build found here. Somehow I've craved the experience of the poor fit, occasional missing parts, and dreadful "blotter paper" for myself. At the last International Paper Modelers Convention, I bought a large stack of MM's after Peter Heesch remembered that I was looking for them, and was kind enough to stock up. So I had plenty of choices to pick from.

Even though I generally don't like WW I tanks, the Renault R17 (or FT, or FT17) became my choice for several reasons:

1. First and foremost, the U. S. Army Heritage and Education Center has one in their collection, so I know Don Boose will be delighted to see it done in paper.
2. I wanted to build something with individual treads, rather than a band track.
3. MM's choice of colors for this model are a lovely shade of forest green and . . . wait for it . . . PURPLE tracks! How could I resist?

The kit contains four pages of parts, plus the usual assortment of somewhat mystifying diagrams and instructions in Polish. Google translate will be needed in a few spots. The cover art depicts the tank rolling through a beautiful spring-green field beneath blue skies, without any hint that a war might be involved somewhere nearby.

I got off to a modest start this evening by laminating the eggcrate former parts to cardboard, and I should be able to cut and score a part or two this evening. I've been looking forward to this for a while, and there are no microscopic pieces, so this should be fun.
