SpaceX announced on Monday that a faulty Helium bottle attachment system was the likely culprit in the spectacular failure of the companys Falcon 9 rocket last month, causing the loss of the Dragon SpX-7 spacecraft and valuable cargo and science equipment that was to be delivered to the International Space Station as part of the seventh operational Dragon mission to ISS. Elon Musk, SpaceX CEO and Chief Designer, held a briefing in which he detailed the rapid failure mode that transpired on the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket, taking less than a second from the first signs of trouble to the destruction of the stage, making a reconstruction of events difficult.
