Hohensalzburg

My earlier post to the railway section mentions our recent move - what it doesn't say is that in the past my hobbyroom was a small room in my loft.

Now --- I have a whole room to myself! In line with some of my models I have been able to expand to the bigger models which are easier to manipulate in the extra space - Here's the first product of the bigger space. Unfortunately the new room hasn't improved my modelling ;-(

This kit is an older offering from Schreiber. My wife found it in the castle's shop a few years ago on one of our drives through Europe. The castle is built on the top of a rocky outcrop, luckily, there's a lift and there are great views of Salzburg from the castle.

The kit is quite small because it's scaled to 1:400, which means the detail is restricted. For example there are no recessed windows and all passages are just black painted arches on the walls.

The first stage is to connect both parts of the base which is about 22x11 inches. There are areas that have to be removed for access to the interior later on. I found that there were much too small so had to enlarge them all as I progressed. The next step is to add a couple of supports on the base. Again I later found they were too tall for the building so I removed them - The building was fine without them.

At this point I should say that the poor fit may have been my fault - I will never know!

The kit has instructions in English and one of these was the standard "start with part 1 and continue in numerical order" However the two pages of "tips for building" ignored this. For example "ignore part 18 till later and add part 41 to part 17" They also indicate that the courtyards should be added to the supports then the details are be added. I added the details first, I couldn't believe that all these could be added after the courtyards had been glued to such a large base. remember the scale --- some of the buildings that had to be placed were very small.

Despite all this I managed to massage the parts into a reasonable fit without leaving obvious gaps between them.

Having said all the above, I enjoyed making the castle and could recognise the areas we had visited (always a bit of fun)

Cheers

Mike
