Why no custom tones for text messages?

So why is it windows will not let us set custom tones for text messages or emails? It is one of the biggest problems I have with learning to love the windows platform so far. Sorry I'm not a programmer but I just don't see why we can add ring tones but not new tones for the other stuff.
