Need some audio help on android

On my S4 when listening to music on bluetooth or wired headset when I get a notification my sound dips in volume. It seems that it dips down to the max level before you get the warning about losing your hearing. To fix it I just have to pause the music and hit play again. What's it doing and how do I fix it?
