GPM's IJN Cruiser "Sendai"

Launched in April 1934, the Imperial Japanese light cruiser Sendai was first assigned to Yangtse River patrol in China. At the time of Pearl Harbor, she was escorting troop transports on their way to Malaya. Later she covered the invasion of Sumatra and patrolled the Strait of Malacca for British and Dutch vessels escaping from Singapore.

She was part of the main force at Midway but did not see combat there. She did escort duty for troop transports in the Indian Ocean and at Rabaul, New Britain, Bougainville, the Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, and Papua, New Guinea. During her career, she escaped torpedo attacks by TBF Avenger, bombs from B-25 and B-17, and 16-inch shells from the USS Washington.

In November 1943, at the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, Sendai was the flagship of a destroyer force in a convoy attempting to reinforce Bougainville. The convoy was intercepted by an American task force of cruisers and destroyers. Sendai came under fire from all four Allied cruisers and sank on 2 November with the loss of Captain Shoji and 184 crew. IJN destroyers and a submarine rescued Admiral Ijuin and 311 of Sendai's crew.

The Kit: The artwork is up to GPM's usual high standards. I also bought the laser-cut frames and laser-cut details from GPM. The frames went together well and quickly without much cleanup. That's as far as I've gotten this evening. The laser-cut details look excellent.

I won't post a full build thread but I will post my progress now and then with a running review of the kit.

I have started three torpedo boat kits recently. All three have been set aside or abandoned unfinished. None were GPM kits. I'm more optimistic about the Sendai. I'm teaching college five days a week this semester but I hope to finish this project early in the New Year and maybe start on GPM's HMS Prince of Wales.

The photos are from GPM and other sources -- to help boost my courage.
