I have now started the new design for a model of Ely Cathedral. The model will be comparable in size to the one of Peterborough cathedral and architecturally, there are many similarities too. However, there is a tall and rather oddly-placed west tower but most unusual of all is the great Octagon, a unique response to replacing the central Norman tower which fell after standing for only two hundred years. I have taken a lot of photos for this model and can say that, for now, the process of designing it looks straight forward enough: it's all boxes. The process will be slow as I am currently really into painting again. As well as doing oil paintings of near by village churches I have also done some watercolours of a decapitated Victor bomber and various other aeroplanes in retirement at an air field near Coventry.
