editing pictures

Can anyone explain how I can insert pictures between the lines of my text? I can add pictures, but they all end up in a group at the end of my posting and I would like to place some of them next to the lines that deal with them.
The manual mentions an arrow next to the manage attachment icon, but I can't see it.
