1/50 Morris-Martel

Here we have the Morris-Martel one man tank from the Robototehnik site Robototehnik (?????? ?? ??????)'s photos. I'm intrigued by kits on this site. The model parts are a mixture of sharp photorealistic textures, occasionally coupled with jaggedy edged, seemingly low res pieces. A large number of 1/50 armor kits are available singly, as well as some dioramas with multiple models. You have to poke around the site to make sure nothing is missed. There are even some 1/50 scale figures hidden with some of the kits.

Being unsure of the fit and finish of the line, I thought I'd tackle one of the less parts intensive models first, so I chose their Morris-Martel tankette. This rear wheel steering, between-the-wars design was built in both one-man and two-man versions with various armament layouts. In the 1927 field trails, it failed to perform as well as the Carden-Lloyd tankette, and never went into production.

The build was straightforward, with a nicely illustrated instructions page. It's a small model, measuring approximately 1 1/4 inches wide by 2 5/8 inches long. The fit of each and every part was spot on. My only complaint is the overall darkness of the model. A lot of texturing and detail just disappears when the parts page is printed out. I might have been able to adjust the saturation, but I think that much of the fine detail wouldn't have held up to that either. Many of their other models appear very dark, too. The exhaust pipe is fashioned from fine lead solder, and the machine gun is made of wire with paper wrapping here and there. I mounted the model on a Rawen and Paran base that's been textured with oak woodgrain.

Next on the to-do list is their BA-10 in 1/50, already printed out and ready to go.
