Our local library had a copy of this latest film from Hayao Miyazaki. The inspiration was the life of Jiro Horikoshi, famous designer of the Mitsubishi Zero. It's more or less accurate regarding Horikoshi's professional accomplishments and features the studio's traditional high-quality animation. The mysticism of previous Miyazaki films takes the form of a dream connection with Count Caproni. Much of the film is devoted to the romance with Nahoko, who dies young of tuberculosis. But this personal stuff is almost all fictitious -- Horikoshi's actual wife did not have TB nor did she die young. It also seemed odd that the only image of Zeros was at the very end of the film. My verdict: lovely images, lovely airplane depictions, worth seeing -- but as weak in the history department as any other animated film.
