On November 3rd, 1957, Laika became the first animal to orbit the earth.
She was probably the best-known dog of her time for being one of the main protagonists of the 20h century.
And Maybe the best-known dog of all time.
Her story is well-known to people who have been interested in the space race.
For those who are not so familiar, here's a nice article by The New Yorker: http://ift.tt/2zewTCA
In 1988 the famous Spanish group Mecano released a song in her honor.
You can watch it here (with English subtitles): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBV_TrSJQpc (It always gives me the chills.)
Laika's legacy was not confined to the history of space, but it touched the whole humanity at different levels.
I even remember in the 1980s I knew several dogs who were named after her.
One can only hope she has forgiven humankind from the dog heaven.
"And if the legend is true, then we have to think.
There's one dog less in the world
And there's one more star in the sky"
(Mecano - Laika)
