I was messing around on the Nexus 7 last night and went to XDA to see the latest and greatest custom roms, and found two different builds claiming 4.4 kat. I tried the first which was a Slim build flashed fine along with a 4.4 gapps build, but I lost my root. Went back into recovery and flashed my backup.
I went back to the forum and downloaded a ASOP build with their gapps package. Several people had posted saying their flash failed and were questioning the root issue as well. I flashed anyway and everything is fine. It is a straight 8 build with no customizations, but has the new launcher with all the Google Now features on the home screen, camera and whatnot.
I'll play with it for a bit and see where the developers go with it in the future as I am sure we will see a number of 4.4 builds for several device start to pop up now that the Kat is out of the bag
