Nice backgrounds, trees & other stuff

Sorry if this is old news.

There are a number of nice background sheets, stone walls, trees etc. This is a Japanese paper model manufacturer, Facet, mostly Japanese castles and other kits. But for us some interesting free stuff via pdf. There is a button to select your language - top of left menu. The link below is for castle related stuff, but at the bottom of the left menu are links for aircraft and ship related items. The aircraft section has four ground/grass cover sheets that might be nice for buildings or whatever. Enjoy!

G'DAY from down under

I am Darren from Sydney Australia and looking forward to building some of the fabulous creations from this site. I had a go many years ago with some basic ones but looking to hone my skills and tackle some of the more complex ones.
Looks like a great community of members here.
Thanks for having me.
Cheers, Darren

The Mystery Machines

I built three versions by three different designers, but I can't find the name of one of the designers. I downloaded the model back in 2012, but searched today for it so I could get the designer's name, but didn't find it. All three are only one page for each model. The first model is by Gary M. Williams. The second is by ? The third is airdave's model.

PNG vs JPG

When posting an image as an attachment, the upload window says that JPG, GIF and JPG are limited to 5 MB or 640x480 pixels.

That's clearly not what happens in practice. PNG images with a width over 640 pixels are resized to 640 pixels and converted to jpg while JPG images are left as is.

examples :

here are 2 PNG images originally in 2268 x 935 resized to 640 pixels wide and converted to jpg by the forum's software.

here are 2 jpg images. The bigger one is 1429 x 2048. The forum's software didn't resize them.
Why are PNG and JPG images treated differently ?

Let's see what happens to this 1081x361 pixels PNG image. (58.67 kb). Edit: resized to 640x214 and converted to JPG. The smaller image (506 x 320) is left alone.

I'm using png images because that's the format Inkscape uses for exporting bitmaps.

What Paper Categories at a Contest?

I am booked to attend the Toronto Scale Model Show later this year.
Otherwise known as Ajax 37 Model Show.
And I have talked to the organizers about possibly adding some paper categories to their Judged competition.
Its only talk right now, but who knows.
....................................

Thought I might ask the opinion of you paper modellers...

if you were to attend a formerly "plastic" Scale Model event,
and new "Paper" Model Categories were made available,
what Categories would you suggest?

Assuming this was something like an IPMS event...plastic models...
and they had never hosted Paper Models before
but were interested in opening their doors to us.

And, they could tolerate only 3, maybe 4 Categories (specifically for Paper Models)
with the goal of encouraging involvement from any and all types of Paper Modellers.

What would you suggest those categories be?

For example...(Paper) Aircraft, Aviation, Aeronautics, etc

Remember, we have no idea what types of models will show up, if any.
And we have to cover as many bases as possible with only 3 (or 4) Awards..

Saunders roe sr45 princess

Ahoy
Back on the Neptune build here is build I done a year back or so this is a free download on the forum the designer is Sir Gary Pillsworth this is the second build of his design the first one was the Raptide Dragon. This here is the Saunders Roe Princess flying boat. I never seen this one modeled before I could be the first mostly in paper. A good build it was a little difficult on the fuselage but it goes together very well the scale is 1/144 a small scale but this is a huge flying boat the bigger thye plane in this scale will influence the size. The Princess was conceived in 1946 at this time a lot of commercial flying boats were becoming obsolete because of the new jet age and four power driven aircraft could match the range like that of the flying boat and a lot of new airports were available rendering this aircraft obsolete. there were 3 such examples only one flew the other two were cacooned by 1954 the last Princess was stricken a victim of here time. Here are my complete pictures of this mighty long lost flyingboat from a bygone era,.

Mark IX 1/50 - Duck

An earlier thread - http://ift.tt/2kJV6XB - talked about this strange prototype tank. This is the build of Wayne's Mark IX Duck design rescaled to 1/50.

The build was fairly straightforward having recently built another Mark IX model. The tiny brackets to hold the flotation tanks were a trial - especially when I dropped the container they were in on the floor. I was seriously grateful that older houses in Queensland don't usually have carpet. I'm not sure why the two added parts compared to the older Mark IX are a different colour - perhaps my printer was complaining about the heat/humidity here.

I did the same laminating and embossing on this model as I did for the previous Mark IX build. I think the card for the centre section should have been doubled - it's just too floppy as a single layer in this scale.

Regards,

Charlie

Stripping parts from a Blender 3D model

I realize that there's a google search and a youtube video that shows me exactly what I want, but an hour of searching and randomizing my keywords is leaving me still scratching my head. So please bear with me.

I have a Blender 3D model that is a pretty good representation of the spacecraft I want to recreate. Its a complete model and even includes textures, which while I wouldn't use entirely, some of the components are pretty accurate.

I know how to enter "Edit" mode and switch to "solid" view. Some faces I can select and others I cannot (the don't have a dot in the center of them).

How can I tell the dimensions of the "part" I've selected?

Well, let's start there anyhow. Any suggestions?

Hello from the UK.

I'm a bit late posting here. I joined two weeks ago, I'm still finding my way around. I'm really impressed with everyone's work and knowledge a really good forum and helpful admin. I live slap bang in the centre of the UK as far from the sea as we can get so I find ships and boats especially interesting.

Seeking Builder for Murphy IXS Enterprise

I have been contacted by a person in Virginia, U.S.A., who is looking for someone to build the Aaron Murphy-designed IXS Enterprise that he has purchased from Zarkov Models.

This is the model: 1/157 IXS Enterprise by Aaron Murphy :: Murph's Models :: Paper Models :: ZarkovModels Store

If you are interested in this project, please send me a private message so I can put you in touch with this person and discuss terms.

Home-made Plotter/Cutter

I took a little time off from making the paper models to experiment with an Arduino card, stepper motors and some old printers and drives I had collected.
I made a little prototype plotter from online tutorials using the dvd rom motors and frames. It actually worked really well, albeit small.

My next step has been to modify an old deskjet to be a plotter. This is working well, I just have to get the software scaling corrected. I don't think I have it 1/1 scaling from drawing to plot. My next step will be to replace the pen with either a swivel knife or a dremel type tool with a very small tool to act as a router with the card stock.

I know you can purchase working cutters pretty cheap nowadays, but I am having fun and learning new things. In the very least, a plotter using 50 cent ink pens will trump a printer that uses 30 dollar ink cartridges. At least for my models, which are usually not colored to begin with. :)

If I do get it to work decently, I'll post some video. I may end up tiring of the whole idea and returning to modeling, but I'll probably give it a couple more weekends and see what happens :)

Also, does anyone else have experience with Arduino's and coding? I may need to pick your brain :)

Here is a picture of my mini plotter.

Der Kampflieger 1/48 BFC-2 error

Gang,

Haven't found this posted anywhere, so I wanted to give everyone a heads-up.

The Kampflieger 1/48 BFC-2 is supposed to represent an aircraft from Bombing 6 (VB-6) aboard USS Enterprise circa 1937. The drawing at the top of the instructions is correct, but the model has an incorrect squadron code on the fuselage. The model has "3-B-16;" it should be "6-B-16." Bombing 3 (VB-3) was aboard USS Saratoga.

Of course, I failed to notice the error until I had almost finished the fuselage! Grrrrrrrrr....

Christmas Market mark 2

As the title suggests this is the second market made by the people in Mondorfer and the second version I have made. Like the first one, I printed two of their pdfs on one A4 sheet and like the first, it's a bit small!

This version is a bit more ambitious but the quality has not dropped.

There are dozens of two-sided figures with the kit, but in most cases I only used one side of each figure, giving me almost twice as many to make!

Quite a challenge when you see how small they are - anyway it's a lovely model to make on the approach to Christmas! yes - I made it a few months ago.

Shame there's no snow - but then again we have always been lucky with our trips to the markets - dry but cold!

Cheers

Mike

Bugatti Royale

I think this is my first "modern" car.

The kit is from Alcan and is 1:24 scale, making the model about 9 inches long. It's one of Ettore's one-of series of custom monsters, only about 6 or 7 where made. The unused engines were latter used to power the Paris Metro.

It's quite an easy kit to put together but the major missing part is the Elephant mascot on the radiator. Oh well, you can't have everything ;-)))

Cheers

1:300 Space Race

Time to kick off a project I've been planning for quite a while. Hopefully my ADHD doesn't destroy this one, too...

This will be a living thread, to be updated as I complete construction. Due to limits on printer scaling settings, the models can't be a true 1/300. Most models were originally 1/96, but will be built at ~1/306. Models that were 1/100 will end up at 1/311. Models that were 1/144 should be closest to a true 1/300.

The thread begins with a rocket that doesn't truly belong to the space race, but could be thought of as the grandfather of the space race - von Braun's first successful ballistic missile, the V-2.

The model is a free download from Nielspapermodels, designed at 1/96.

Career Advice, 5¢

I teach at a small private college and Lindsay, the head of career counseling there, often sets up a table in the cafeteria, library, student lounges, and other common areas to offer information on internships, employment, and careers.

She says, "I sometimes feel like Lucy from 'Peanuts' with her Psychiatric Help, 5¢' booth." That comment was just too good to pass up. On Monday morning, I will visit her office to drop off a little gift. The best part is that Lindsay looks a little like Lucy.

Sky Raiders; The Movie

I just watched Chapter iii of the 1941 serial "sky Raiders" on Acme Classics.
Besides the pretty little Aeroneer Racer it had severals shots of an autogyro, maybe a C-4. three times it was referred to as a helicopter. Was that word i general use as early as 1941 ?
BTW in the early fifties my dad, a crop duster and A&P mechanic always called them helocopters around me,becauses he didn't think children should say hell.
