ANBO IV, CardPlane 1/2010, 1:33 scale

I decided to knock out one more airplane model before (maybe...probably) turning my attention to ships. I've had this model downloaded since it became available at CardPlane, and I purchased appropriate shades of paint for edge coloring. That paint is over four years old now, so I figured I better hurry up and use it before it gums up completely. This aircraft has featured twice here at Paper Modelers, one build done by B-Manic, whose model fell victim to Feline Necrotic Mastication Disorder, and a beautiful finished example by OSTOJA. Since Ostoja has posted a detailed build log of this model already, this will be a bare-bones log with infrequent updates.

To start with, the paint I purchased is from the Vallejo Model Color line - Intermediate Blue for the undersides and German Camouflage Bright Green for the tops. These were the closest matches I could find at the hobby shop, but both needed some toning down with matte white to get them closer to the model's printed colors.

For the formers and other thick parts, I built up a couple of sheets of heavy card from laminated sheets of plain card glued together with 3M 77 spray adhesive. I have plenty of chipboard on hand, but that stuff is brutal to cut, hence my preference for laminated card. Three sheets of plain card plus the former parts printed on 20# bond plus three layers of adhesive brings the total thickness to about 0.8 mm, which is at the low end of the recommended thickness range.

I decided to start with the wing, just for the heck of it. Having previously built three of Lech Kolodziejski's models, I remembered how tight the fit tolerances are on his designs. Thus, I cut on the inside of all the parts lines (very important!). Here's the left wing formers:

I should note that although, for the fit of the model, parts lines should be cut to the inside, slots for interlocking formers must necessarily, in my case, be cut to the outside, because my parts are not 1 mm thick.

And here's why, if you build this kit, you must cut on the insides of the lines:

This is the wing's central section, and if you look carefully you will notice that the skin fits tightly all the way around, with the cut ends just barely meeting aft. If I had cut on the lines or, worse, outside of them, the skin would not have fit without a great deal of sanding of the formers.

One thing I noticed after building up the one set of wing formers, and I believe this was mentioned in one of the other build logs, is that this plane is big! The finished model will have a wingspan greater than the Po-2's. Hope I have enough display space left!

A last item to note: this was the last model hosted at Lech's CardPlane web site, over four years ago. I long assumed that Lech was taking a leave from the hobby, based on inactivity at the site. Silly me! Turns out Lech remained as productive as ever, but his recent designs have been published by WAK. These designs include a PZL-38 Wilk, a PZL P 11a, and a Lublin R-XX. I hope he is making at least a little profit from these (and deservedly so), because he certainly gave the hobby plenty of excellent free designs!
