Although I haven't done much new stuff the last couple of months, I have been working on some repairs and finishing touches on several older projects. All because I got a mail the other day, sent by the National Spaceflight Museum (Nationaal Ruimtevaartmuseum) here in the Netherlands asking me if I could loan them some more of my models. In total they asked for six launchers to be displayed in their new showcase of rockets. Needless to say I felt honoured and I was more than willing to let them have the models.
They asked for the Titan IIIe (designed by Mark Cable) with a Voyager space probe on board, Proton M and Soyuz FG (Leo Cherkashyn), the Soyuz on board of the launcher of course designed by Alfonso Moreno, Delta II 9725 MER (Erik te Groen), Atlas MA-6 (Precision Paper Space Models) Bumper-WAC (Niels Knudsen) and the Ariane 5 ECA, based on Ton Noteboom's design but heavily tinkered by yours truly. I still am particularly fond of the Soyuz and the Ariane 5. They look so good.
I realised the Delta II (MER-A Spirit) was heavily discoloured by sunlight, unfortunately. So I made a new Delta, but not the same. I decided to add some more Dutchness to the set with the Delta 3910 flight no. 166, which was used to launch IRAS. Luckily Erik te Groen also had a 3000 series Delta in his model line. I only had to change the logo and the flight number.
Also, I sprayed all the models with UV-resistant spray although I hope they won't be displayed in full daylight.
So although I -a little reluctantly - see my models go, I also realise they finally will get a bigger audience. I really hope people will be surprised when they find out they're made of paper. And it is a big honour to have these models in a museum. They'll leave for Lelystad at the end of the month. If there is any interest, I'll post some pictures of the event.
