Universal Thinner for ACRYLIC Paints

(Recipe courtesy of Del Herbert, renowned champion wildlife carver)

To make 8 0z (250 ml):

1/2 oz acrylic matte varnish*

1/4 oz acrylic flow medium**

1/4 oz acrylic retarder***

Balance H20. **** (see notes)

Combine in a suitable dispensing bottle, and mix well.

Notes:* Acrylic matte varnish might be obtained from your local Michaels, Art Supply store, or can be substituted with ACRYLIC matte Varathane (exterior grade). **Acrylic flow medium is also available at Michaels, your art supply store, or in Ivory Liquid detergent. If you are using Ivory, three or four drops to 8 oz of mixture ought to do it. Flow medium is a detergent that breaks down the surface tension of the other ingredients to allow them to flow into the texture. *** Acrylic retarder is an agent that inhibits too-rapid drying of your paint. Check Michaels or your local art supply store **** Water: if your water is very hard with dissolved minerals, use distilled water. Experiment! I have airbrushed tube acrylic paint using this stuff. If questions, please PM me!
