One of the more interesting bits of American History, and architectural design...
As most of you probably know, the Washington Monument reopened recently, after the 2011 earthquake that damaged the iconic structure.
What most of us probably didn't know, was that there was a 20 year 'break' in the construction of it. It sat, half finished, for two decades, while people argued over money, money that ran out, the death of the architect, and other reasons. There were proposals made to 'finish' it in an alternate way, because the original architect died, but those were shelved, and it was eventually decided to finish it as designed, when they got back to it.
I ran across one of the alternate designs this morning, and I thought I'd share it with the architectural modelers here. I intend to do a model of this, because I like alternate history, and what-ifs, in addition to being an Architectural Historian. Maybe when I get to a point where the Montana-class Battleship is getting oppressive, I might toss this one off.

There are lots of very interesting drawings in the National Archives...
