HMVS Cerberus - First Card Build

Hi all,

I've been building wooden ship models for the past 20 years or so, and I've decided to expand my skill set to include Card Modelling. For a look at some of my ships (and other wooden models) click THIS LINK.

My first card build is a free download of HMVS Cerberus (1870). I only have about another week's work to finish her, so this won't be a full Build Log. To see the complete log on Model Ship World click THIS LINK.

Below are a couple of pics of my work to date. I haven't worked out how to insert the pics into the post yet.

Cheers, Danny

Wood Models

Hi all,

This is my first foray into Paper Modelling. I'm currently building a model of HMVS Cerberus (free download version). I'll post a Build Log in the appropriate Forum.

My other hobby is making Wooden Models. I've built 12 ships, most of them three-masted like HMS Victory, Charles W. Morgan, HMS Supply etc from kits, but the crowning glory so far is a Scratchbuilt HMS Vulture with a fully framed hull and full interior details. I've also built a Cross-section model of the same ship. These can be seen on Model Ship World, here is a LINK to Vulture's Build Log. My other build logs can be found in my Signature on the site.

Other models I've made include a kit of a Wells Fargo Stagecoach and several models in bottles. These can also be found by visiting my Model Ship World build log.

Cheers, Danny

Farman 224 "Le Centaure II" by Ingenia

Here is another in the series of pre-war aviation subjects from Ingenia. The Farman 224 was huge - perhaps the largest French airliner of its day - 4 motors, and carrying 40 passengers. The aircraft flew around 1937, as the civilian version of a bomber. The model is from that era, though the date of publication is not indicated. The artist is E. A Shefer, the scale is 1:50, and the publisher is Pelican Blanc.

The large format is challenging - the fuselage has a forward and aft section, that are joined around an inner box. The design is simple, but contains a complete cabin, with seats and a bar, and a simply laid out cockpit. The cabin is set into a box structure, that provides the skeleton for the plane. The pilots' cabin, which is above the main cabin, sits on a little platform. The landing gear, which retract, are built out in a simple 3D frame, that mounts inside a horizontal frame that traverses the fuselage.

Next new model from WAK - othodox church of St.Dmitri in Piatkowa (East Poland) in 1:100 scale. The model has instructions in Ukrainian and Polish.

Wibault-Penhoët Trimotor by Ingenia

Here is an old gem - a pre-war French model of the French equivalent of the Tin Goose. I was able to get it on eBay, now long out of print, and try building it. The old Ingenias are large scale, printed in large format and colorful booklets. They were of a variety of subjects - architectural, aviation, ships and others. The instructions and designs are simple, often crude - made for children. Yet they are appealing, and are of subjects I have never seen otherwise.

Here is the instruction sheet, and the start on the fuselage. While there are no formers, there is an inner box that gives the fuselage structure and rigidity. Fit is reasonable, but takes a little massaging.Attachment 316887

Breckenridge Texas Warbird Airshow

Well, this past weekend, I and my family made a journey to see an airshow.
But first, a little back story.

In 1977, a small group of warbird folks got together and held the first airshow
in Breckenridge, Texas. Fast forward about 10 years, and I got to attend the show.
In 1997, the last show was put together.

Twenty years later, I find an announcement that the Airshow had returned this year.
Lots of information on the hows, who's and why's out there, but the point being,
IT WAS GOING TO BE A WARBIRD AIRSHOW! No "suck, squeeze, bang, blow", just lots of
"whirly thingies on the front of the the airplane" airshow.

As I work through the almost 700 pictures I took, I will try and post up some of the better ones I managed to get.

Here is a summary of what I was able to see, feel, and enjoy from an aviation lovers view.

4 x F4U Corsair
2 x Hawker Fury
1 x F4F Wildcat
1 x TBM Avenger
1 x SB2C Helldiver
3 x B-25
2 x C-47
1 x PT-17
1 x PT-19
2 x P-40
1 x Spitfire
1 x F7F-3P Tigercat
3 x T-28 Trojan
1 x A-26
1 x C-45
1 x Grumman Widgeon
1 x P-38
12 x T-6/SNJ
1 x T-34 Mentor
2 x L-5
1 x L-19
6x P-51

Also, alot of civil aircraft, including Air Tractor flyby, Fairchild "Funk", Stinson Reliants, etc.

There was also the Commerative Air Force "Tora Tora Tora" display.

We arrived early enough, thanks to a strategic staging point, to secure a very desirable
viewpoint to observe the show. The hardstand and apron were open to the public early on,
and some aircraft departed early, providing a very up close and personal ( within 300 feet) high speed flyby.

The sound of a Corsair, doing a knife edge pass that close is unforgettable!

Being a Flying Tiger for 10 years, I will start with a couple of shots of me, courtesy of my son, with the two Shark Mouth P-40's.

Watch this thread, as I will try and post regularly as I sort through the pics.

cardboard ohno's

Where does construction paper fit?

I keep seeing so many comments about how paper is paper and weight is the only difference between the paper and cardstock outside of coating.
But construction paper seems to be very different from any other paper/cardstock?
It seems to me as if it's not as dense as regular paper but is thicker, in measurement? Also it usually fails after 2 or 3 folds making it pretty much unusable for most paper models?
Only asking for clarification on paper weight/thickness information.
I've also seen construction paper called card stock in some places further confusing the issue.

Curtiss B-2 Condor - Beta - Murph's Models

Hi friends!

Here is my effort to build a Curtiss B-2 Condor a beta from Murph's Models, is a very beautiful model with awesome textures.

Is a fuselage buid sequence. Is not for begginers, but beside a uncommon solutions for build (and very nice indeed) the shape of fuse is captured...

Is a wing and nacelles sequence build. Nacelles is easy to build because have no formers, the secret is alignment of nacelles with wing plan...

The next steps is made a nacelles acessories, tail and undercarriage. The radiators is pretty delicated because is glue top edge with no tabs. The tail is a complex, but is easy to build the struts fit perfect. in this step I build a struts braces on nacelles. After I build undercarriage legs and tail, with no problems. all fit very weel.

The next setps is paint the white edges, made a initial rigging and apply a layer of varnish to put in a build jig for struts wings and high wings.

Regards!

I know I'm taking a BIG risk here, but "Where should I put this?"

I am trying to donload the 1/72 concorde but can get nowhere, the page has no download details.
Am I, as usual, doing something obviously wrong, are the pink elephants operating my keyboard again?

Goodday

Hello,
Thanks you for accepting me into the group.
I'm a very, very, slow railway modeller about to embark upon some railway buildings and some card rolling stock. Older than many, I remember a time when card and paper were practically all that was on offer and folk used then to do amazing things with it: it's nice to see that continued by today's modellers.
I also have a fancy to build a small ship for a small scale railway - a dock scene, and would appreciate a pointer to plans of a suitable (meaning small) coaster for this.
In the meantime, I look forward to exploring the site.

Don't remember seeing some of those last time I looked! Anyway, it's a good heads up for those who haven't found this excellent site before.

Kincho Insect Killer: Cockroach Crease Pattern

This was posted over on facebook.

Kincho is a Japanese brand of insect killer/repellent.
And they released a crease pattern of a cockroach, and a 55 minute video of the folding of the bug.

US Navy Grumman Goose

It has been a long time since any real building for me, much less design work efforts, but a flying Goose is now seen around here as Addison Pemberton has completed his wonderful 5 year project, with much cooperation from the group of enthusiast friends he has at Felts Field, Spokane Valley.
Since I did the Goose 10 years ago or so for Fiddlers Green, I thought maybe I could do a version to represent Addison's Goose which rumbles overhead on its way to the larger lakes of Coeur d' Alene, and the very large Pend Oreille (has a submarine testing base!). However this has become a challenge for me as my skills are rusty but have pressed on...I think I'm about ready for a more official test build of the progress so far. Having started with an old plan -pre Fiddlers Green- it has become more of a complete redesign than a redraw, but I think is a better model for it, that is if the parts work...we'll see

Schneider CD 1:50

A new Wayne McCullough model - Schneider CD.

The Schneider CD was a heavy artillery tractor based on the chassis of the Schneider CA1 tank. It was used to tow heavy artillery pieces like the 145mm Ruelle St-Chamond and 155mm GPF from roadheads to battery positions across shelled and muddy graound. It could also supply the guns unlike the "pure" tractors like the Holt tractors. There were about 250 Schneider CDs in service at the end of WW1. The French Army kept them in reserve and they were mobilised in 1939, some even were used by the Wehrmacht.

This was a challenging model - it's quite small - at 1:50 it's 105mm (about 4inches) long.

Regards,

Charlie
